Sonia Janahi appointed to ILO Governing Body

In a significant international achievement for the Kingdom of Bahrain, the International Labor Organization (ILO) during its 112th session has announced the appointment of Sonia Janahi, member of the Bahrain Chamber Board of Directors, as a regular member of the ILO Governing Body, making her the first Arab businesswoman to hold this prestigious position since the ILO's establishment.

 

Janahi affirmed that the appointment reflects the continued support of Bahrain's wise leadership for employers and workers in the kingdom and is a testament to the significant labor gains achieved during the comprehensive reform project of His Majesty the King, as well as the steadfast support of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, the Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women.

 

She added that Bahrain's pioneering regional and international role in consolidating labor values has earned the kingdom a strong reputation in global forums and that the achievement adds to Bahrain's extensive record of labor accomplishments, driven by the country's ambitious strategy to elevate working conditions to the highest international standards.

 

Janahi expressed her deep gratitude to the Supreme Council for Women and its pivotal role in enhancing the success of Bahraini businesswomen. She affirmed that women in Bahrain have become key partners in the nation's sustainable development, occupying leadership positions at the local, regional, and international levels. The Council's efforts in supporting and empowering Bahraini women have been instrumental in ensuring they fully benefit from the kingdom's progress across various development sectors.

 

For his part, Sameer Abdullah Naas, Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry, congratulated Sonia Janahi on this international achievement. He affirmed that the Chamber's Board of Directors' decision to nominate their board member for the position of regular member of the ILO Governing Body, representing the Employers' Group for West Asia, was a decision rooted in the multiple successes achieved by Bahraini women.

He pointed out that her election represents a milestone in the history of the International Labor Organization, as she is the first Arab businesswoman to attain this position. Stressing that this accomplishment is a crowning achievement for the successes Bahrain has realized at the Arab and global levels in the field of labor, thanks to the wise visions and sound guidance of the kingdom's leadership.
